Description

Pokemon fans won’t be able to handle the cuteness of this Vulpix Pikachu Bento! Easily recreate your own Vulpix Pikachu by using my “secret hack”, which allows ANYONE to recreate a precise image out of food with ease. 100% edible, 100% adorable, and absolutely perfect for decorating rice!

Ingredients

Food Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • ~1 teaspoon sriracha (see Notes for alternative dye methods)
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch, divided
  • Nori seaweed
  • 2 slices white cheese (such as swiss, mozzarella, or white Kraft Singles)
  • 5 slices pizza pepperoni (or salami, cut into small circles)
  • Pickled ginger
  • ~2 tablespoons dark soy sauce (regular soy sauce or tamari will also work)
  • 1 slice chicken ham
  • Red & black edible food markers
  • Edible gold star sprinkles (optional)
  • Ketchup rice (enough to fill your bento box)

Recommended Tools:

Instructions

Orange & Yellow Egg Crepes:

  1. Take your 2 eggs and separate the whites from the yolks. Add the whites to a small bowl and set aside the yolks in a separate bowl.
  2. In a new bowl, mix together cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water. Add the cornstarch slurry to the egg whites.
  3. Add sriracha to the egg white mixture, and whisk together until everything is fully mixed. Optional: Strain the egg mixture through a fine-meshed strainer – this results in a smoother egg crepe.
  4. Heat a small non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Add the egg mixture, and swirl to coat the bottom of the pan. Cover pan with lid and allow the egg crepe to fully cook. Remove carefully with a spatula and allow to cool.
  5. Use the reserved egg yolks to make a bright yellow egg crepe (recipe can be found HERE).

Decorations:

  1. Place a few large pieces of pickled ginger into a small bowl, and completely submerge them in the dark soy sauce. Allow the pickled ginger to “steep” in the soy sauce until it becomes a deep dark brown color, then drain and reserve the dyed ginger pieces for later.
  2. Take the Vulpix Pikachu paper cutouts and, using the picture below as your guide, cut them into the 6 following pieces:Vulpix Pikachu tracer guide
  3. Place tracer #1 (the “head”) on top of the orange egg crepe, and, using the craft knife, cut out the full shape. Place tracer #2 (the “face”) in the appropriate spot on top of the orange head cutout, and use the craft knife to trace and cut out the face shape.
  4. Place tracer #2 (the “face”) on top of the yellow egg crepe, and use the craft knife to trace and cut out a yellow face.
  5. Place tracer #3 (the “body”) on top of the remaining yellow egg crepe, and use the craft knife to trace and cut out a yellow body. From the scrap pieces of yellow egg crepe, use the small oval cutter located on the yellow food cutter wheel to cut out 4 ovals – these will become Pikachu’s arms and feet.
  6. Place tracer #5 (the “cape”) on top of the remaining orange egg crepe, and use the craft knife to trace and cut out an orange cape.
  7. Take the dyed pieces of ginger and gently dab them dry with a paper towel. Spread them out, then place tracers #4 (the “ears”) on top. Use the craft knife to trace and cut out two brown ears (one left and one right). Place tracers #6 (the “cape bottoms”) on top of the remaining dyed ginger, and use the craft knife to trace and cut out two brown poncho pieces (one left and one right) – these will become the fluffy brown ends decorating the bottom of the Vulpix poncho.
  8. Using the cloud (or flower) shaped food cutter, cut out a cloud shape from a slice of pizza pepperoni – this will become the Vulpix poncho’s “forehead fluff”.
  9. Using the small circle cutter located on the yellow food cutter wheel, cut out one circle from the white cheese – this will become the Pokeball located at the front of the Vulpix poncho. Using the red edible food marker, color half the white cheese circle red. Then, carefully use the black edible food marker to draw a straight black line across the middle of the cheese circle, followed by a small black dot in the very middle of the line. Using the tiny circle food cutter, cut out a tiny circle from the remaining white cheese. Place this tiny white circle in the middle of the black dot to complete the Pokeball.

Facial Features:

  1. Using the panda face nori punch, punch out the full design from the nori. Reserve the 2 panda ears (these will become Pikachu’s eyes) and the nose-mouth piece (this will become the Vulpix poncho’s nose), and discard the rest.
  2. Using scissors, carefully cut out Pikachu’s mouth from the remaining nori (refer to the Vulpix Pikachu image for the exact shape). Find a pointy end of nori (either from a new sheet or the scrap pieces), and cut it off so that you’re left with a tiny triangle shape – this will become Pikachu’s nose.
  3. Take the nori nose-mouth piece (AKA the Vulpix poncho’s nose) and, using scissors, cut off the nose segment. If necessary, use the scissors to carefully shape the nose into a rounded triangle shape.
  4. Using the small oval cutter located on the yellow food cutter wheel, cut out two ovals from the chicken ham – these will become the Vulpix poncho’s eyes. Optional: Using a food-safe paintbrush dipped in soy sauce, carefully paint the top half of each chicken ham oval a light brown. Use a paper towel to gently dab away excess soy sauce – this will help to “blend” the brown soy sauce into the chicken ham, making it look more naturally colored.
  5. Using the tiny circle cutter, cut out four tiny circles from the white cheese – these will become the pupils for Pikachu and the Vulpix poncho’s eyes.
  6. Using the small circle cutter located on the pink food cutter wheel, cut out two circles from the remaining white cheese – these will become Pikachu’s red cheeks. Color the two circles red with the red edible food marker.

Assembly:

  1. Fill your bento box with ketchup rice, and gently spread and flatten the rice using the back of a rice paddle or spoon. Place a new slice of white cheese atop the middle of the ketchup rice (you may need to trim it so that it fits into your bento). Optional: Place edible gold star sprinkles along the edges of the white cheese slice, for extra decoration. You can also make the sides of the cheese wavy using a scalloped food cutter.
  2. Carefully place the orange Vulpix head (piece #1) onto the white cheese slice. Place the yellow face piece (piece #2) into the hollow area of the orange head. Complete the body by placing the orange cape (piece #5) underneath the orange head. Add the yellow body piece (piece #3) in between the orange cape.
  3. Take 2 slices of pepperoni and place them slightly underneath the left side of the Vulpix poncho, with one overlapping the other – this will form the Vulpix poncho’s tail. Repeat with two more pieces on the right side. Use the Vulpix Pikachu image for reference.
  4. Using tweezers, carefully place the brown pickled ginger ear pieces (pieces #4) onto the outside edges of the ears of the Vulpix poncho. Place the brown pickled ginger poncho pieces (pieces #6) at the very bottom ends of the orange cape, one on each side.
  5. Pikachu’s Face: Using tweezers, place the nori eyes, nose, and mouth onto Pikachu’s yellow face, using the Vulpix Pikachu image for reference. Place a tiny white cheese pupil onto the top inner-side of each nori eye. Finally, add Pikachu’s red cheeks, trimming them as needed so that they peek out from “beneath” the poncho.
  6. Vulpix Poncho’s Face: Using tweezers, place the pepperoni “forehead fluff” onto the top of the Vulpix head, using the Vulpix Pikachu image for reference. Place the oval chicken ham eyes just beneath and on either side of the pepperoni fluff, followed by two white cheese pupils on the top inner border of each eye. Finally, place the nori nose in between the two eyes.
  7. Using tweezers, place Pikachu’s feet and arms onto his yellow body, using the Vulpix Pikachu image for reference.
  8. Using tweezers, place the cheese Pokeball in the middle of the cape portion of the Vulpix poncho, so that it resembles a button.

Notes

  • If you’d prefer not to have the paper cutouts touching your food, you can use the 6 paper tracers to make 6 identical tracers out of parchment or wax paper instead; you can then use these to cut your food items into the appropriate shapes.
  • If any of the pieces aren’t sticking to the cheese very well, feel free to use some mayo or honey to help them stick in place better.
  • If you’re not a fan of sriracha or spicy food, you can also dye the egg crepe orange using a mix of turmeric & beet powder, like I did with these Candy Corn Onigiri.
